#GPNEWS: GP Garments organises heart-warming activities

It’s warm in Sri Lanka. And this isn’t only due to the pleasant southern climate. The heart-warming initiatives undertaken by our manufacturing centre GP Garments have also stood out in recent months.

Fun in Avissawella

Party in Sri Lanka! All the staff in Sri Lanka had a blast at a show filled with music on September 24. ‘After the pandemic and political crisis in the country, our staff needed a boost. A show packed with music was the ideal pick-me-up’, says Serge, the Managing Director.

During the event, GP’s dance team performed to the tunes of the beloved band D7. Popular artists like Dimanka Wellalage, Nilan Hettiarachchi and Shanika Wanigasekara also appeared on stage.

More than 1,700 employees attended. The employees’ smiles speak for themselves.

Gift for local orphanage

We bade farewell to Geert Derere, the founder of GP Garments, a few years ago. In his memory, GP supports a local orphanage, Jayawiru Sevana Avissawella. This project was very dear to him. Staff and board members visit the orphanage every year around October 23, the date of Geert’s death. It is home to 79 people with mental disabilities. It also houses 47 people with a drug addiction who are working hard on their recovery.

This year, GP visited the orphanage on October 31. To support the orphanage, they donated: 100 chairs, 2 dining tables, toiletries, cleaning products, equipment for the kitchen. Staff from our production centre also served a delicious, elaborate lunch to all the residents. A real tribute.

There was also a nice reference to the late founder in The Rising Sun. In the company magazine, GP’s editorial board wrote: “For all you did for us with a gratitude heart, we say thank you and sincerely we miss you.”

Farewell litter

Litter on the beach - it’s a persistent problem. Fortunately, GP Garments is taking action. Our production centre organised a beach cleaning day for the second time in 2022 on November 19. Supervisors from GP got to work at the beach at Wadduwa.

The result was amazing! They collected 250 kg of litter in an area of - only - 1 km in an hour and a half.

'The Beach Cleaning Programme contributes to two major objectives’, says Sanjaya Nayanajith, Head of HR. ‘First, we cleaned one of the most attractive beaches along the western coast. Secondly, we continue to work on the team spirit among our supervisors.’ What a wonderful initiative. It’s good for people and the planet.
