DASSY and GRS (Global Recycled Standard): a sustainable choice

Sustainability is an absolute must in the clothing industry. DASSY® has opted to adhere to the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) in order to gain official certification for its efforts to ensure a more sustainable future (Control Union, CB-CUC-1405389). What exactly is GRS? And why do we attach so much importance to it at DASSY? In this blog, you’ll find out more about the Global Recycled Standard, the benefits for you as a customer, and how we at DASSY plan to apply this to our new collections.

What does GRS stand for?

Global Recycled Standard is a worldwide standard for products that contain recycled material. The key characteristic for obtaining a GRS certificate is that the textile fibres that are used must be at least 50% recycled.

But GRS goes further than just the material: the label also sets requirements related to social responsibility, environmental management and harmful chemicals. This means that products with this quality label are not just sustainable, but are also produced in an ethically responsible manner

GRS recognises verified recycled products and encourages the use of recycled materials, in order to reduce carbon emissions and lessen the impact of textile production on people and the environment. The accreditation process is carried out by an external certification body, making it a reliable quality label that guarantees sustainability and responsible production.

Criteria for obtaining a GRS certificate

The Global Recycled Standard sets the bar high in both environmental and social terms. The entire production chain is scrutinised and the requirements that are set also cover the choice of materials and production method.

Environmental criteria

The label imposes a series of rules that prevent valuable raw materials from being wasted:

  • At least 50% recycled material: The label is only given for garments in which 50% of the fibres come from recycled material. The exact percentage of recycled material has to be clearly indicated on each garment.
  • No harmful chemicals: No harmful or carcinogenic chemicals may be used in the production of the garments.
  • Sustainability plan: Garment manufacturers have to draw up a plan that addresses waste processing and conscious water and energy use.
  • Wastewater standards: Wastewater is monitored and extensively tested. There are also emission limits, which must not be exceeded, to keep the impact on the environment as low as possible.

Social criteria

In addition, the GRS certificate imposes a series of rules that promote social justice. These rules have been drawn up by the International Labour Organisation (ILO)

  • Ban on child and forced labour, respect for human rights and no discrimination: Fundamental human rights must never be violated during the production process. Child and forced labour are unacceptable.
  • Right to safe and hygienic working conditions: Harmful materials do not belong in the working environment. Employees must be able to do their work in a safe, protected and clean environment, including access to first aid, toilets and drinking water.
  • Freedom of association and right to collective bargaining: Employees must be able to defend their interests without repercussions.
  • Fair pay: Pay and working hours must at least comply with national legal requirements.

On the basis of the above criteria, GRS both provides certainty about the exact percentage of recycled material in a garment and allows you to be sure that the item was produced ethically.

Why does DASSY® actively promote sustainability and GRS?

For DASSY, GRS is a valuable tool for expressing our efforts in the area of sustainability. The standard offers transparency and reinforces our customers’ confidence in our brand. In addition, it helps us to meet the growing demand for more sustainable products.

For you as a customer, GRS offers a guarantee that our garments have been produced sustainably and responsibly, in addition to clarity about the origin and composition of the materials. By doing so, it helps you to make a conscious choice.

GRS in practice: D-FX Flex Next

DASSY wants to continue to take the lead in terms of sustainability, which is why we’ve revised much of our D-FX Flex collection and turned it into D-FX Flex Next. These redesigned models offer the same outstanding quality as their virgin alternatives, but with a smaller ecological footprint. Most of the models have at least 50% recycled material in the main fabric and are therefore GRS certified. In addition, they contain other recycled components such as YKK Natulon zippers and COATS Eco-verde yarn.

The result is a more sustainable clothing line that’s a perfect fit with our other collections and the needs of today’s professionals, including our new branding.

More than a label

DASSY sees GRS as a commitment to a sustainable future. We sincerely believe that we can make a significant contribution to a better world by applying strict environmental and social standards.

DD-FX Flex Next is just the beginning of our journey towards that sustainable future, in which we will constantly strive for better solutions for people and the environment.
